Downcaste is a hard rock band formed by Rich and Ted Allen, two brothers from South Jersey, and drummer Joe Vallee. At first, the band played covers, but quickly developed their own material and broke the mold. In 1996, Rich and Joe enrolled in St. Joseph’s University, and quickly became ensconced in the college music scene. During that time, the band could be heard at Villanova University and at their own institution of higher learning. Downcaste also headlined at area nightclubs, including the Rusty Nail, RT’s, Pennant East, Pontiac Grille, Grape Street Pub and Arena’s. One of their most notable appearances included an opening act slot for ‘King Norris’ of Howard Stern fame.

Downcaste’s music stems from a variety of influences, including the Beatles, Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins and Van Halen. Much of the band’s focus comes from guitar prodigy Ted Allen (a former student at Boston’s Berkeley University of Music), and the bone-crunching rhythm section of Vallee and bassist Mike Britt. Downcaste wants it known… they do have their idiosyncrasies. Vocalist Rich (the eldest of the Allen brothers) is so intense, he sometimes doesn’t eat for days prior to a Downcaste performance. Only recently has Vallee started to play drums wearing shoes, but still refuses to wear a shirt regardless of the dresscode. Ted Allen’s stage presence is reminscent of a classic stoic figure that has takes reverence in his work. Mike Britt compliments the group with his tremendous energy which resonates to all the rest. Together, Downcaste provides a stage presence second to none!

With their recent airplay on 94.1 WYSP’s “Loud and Local”, the year 2004 should be a memorable one for Downcaste. The journey has begun, and they hope you are there for the ride. But don’t take their word for it, take a listen to the rock anthems filled with incredible guitar solos, pounding drums and strong vocals and you’ll understand why the year should be one talked about for many to come.
